2.1   Download

You may download the software over the Internet from the SMART ALEC DOWNLOAD TRAY server:

http://www.smart-alec.com/DownloadTray/X-Software

If you downloaded the installation file in parts, use one of the following commands for concatenating the parts:

cat installation_file.Z.* > installation_file.Z
cat installation_file.gz.* > installation_file.gz
cat installation_file.bz2.* > installation_file.bz2

Should your download manager remove the file extension without actually uncompressing the installation file, rename the file using one of the commands:

mv installation_file installation_file.Z
mv installation_file installation_file.gz
mv installation_file installation_file.bz2

You uncompress the compressed installation file using one of the commands

uncompress installation_file.Z
gunzip installation_file.gz
bunzip2 installation_file.bz2

in the /tmp directory of your computer.

You need the access rights of the Superuser root for installation.

For continuous use of the software you need also the separate product X-LICENSE, which is free of charge.

2.2   Installation directories

If you follow the manual, the files are installed into different directories dependent on the architecture. The directory $XCONTROLX_HOME takes the files which may be shared between machines of same architecture, whereas the directory $XCONTROLX_ETC contains host specific files like license files:

Architecture
Installation directories
$XCONTROLX_HOME
$XCONTROLX_ETC
Hewlett-Packard HP-UX
/opt/XSOcontrolx
/etc/opt/XSOcontrolx
Hewlett-Packard Tru64 UNIX
/usr/opt/XSOcontrolx
/etc/opt/XSOcontrolx
IBM AIX
/usr/Xcontrolx
/usr/Xcontrolx/etc
Linux
/opt/XSOcontrolx
/etc/opt/XSOcontrolx
SGI IRIX
/usr/Xcontrolx
/usr/Xcontrolx/etc
Sun Solaris
/opt/XSOcontx
/etc/opt/XSOcontx

Throughout the whole manual the variables $XCONTROLX_HOME and $XCONTROLX_ETC refer to these directories, respectively.

The following table shows all components of the software:

File
Usage
Installation directory $XCONTROLX_HOME
bin/
executable files
bin/xcontrolx
shell script for executing ...
bin/_xcontrolx
... the real xcontrolx program
bin/uninstall
script for uninstalling
share/
architecture independent files
share/copyright
license terms
share/manual
manual in HTML and Portable Document Format
share/fonts/GUI
font files for graphical user interfaces and the telepointer
Installation directory $XCONTROLX_ETC

Before executing a program, please read the license terms in the file

$XCONTROLX_HOME/share/copyright

or the appropriate license file.

If you choose to install the files into other directories, you have to adjust all shell scripts correspondingly.

2.3   Installing the software

2.3.1   Hewlett-Packard HP-UX

For installing the software you need about 12 MBytes free filesystem space.

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.sw to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Install the software:

/usr/sbin/swinstall -s /tmp/xcontrolx.sw "*"
rm /tmp/xcontrolx.sw

2.3.2   Hewlett-Packard Tru64 UNIX

For installing the software you need about 10 MBytes free filesystem space.

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.tar to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Install the software:

cd /
tar xfp /tmp/xcontrolx.tar
rm /tmp/xcontrolx.tar

2.3.3   IBM AIX

For installing the software you need about 9 MBytes free filesystem space.

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.tar to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Install the software:

cd /usr
tar xfp /tmp/xcontrolx.tar
rm /tmp/xcontrolx.tar

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.tar to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Install the software:

cd /
tar xfp /tmp/xcontrolx.tar
rm /tmp/xcontrolx.tar

2.3.5   SGI IRIX

For installing the software you need about 13 MBytes free filesystem space.

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.tardist to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Under IRIX up to release 6.2 use the following commands:

mkdir /tmp/xcontrolx.dist
cd /tmp/xcontrolx.dist
tar xf ../xcontrolx.tardist
/usr/sbin/inst -a -E -f Xcontrolx
cd ..
rm -r xcontrolx.tardist xcontrolx.dist

Under IRIX from release 6.3 on use the following commands:

cd /tmp
/usr/sbin/inst -a -E -f xcontrolx.tardist
rm xcontrolx.tardist

2.3.6   Sun Solaris

For installing the software you need about 11 MBytes free filesystem space.

Copy the uncompressed installation file xcontrolx.pkg to the temporary directory /tmp on your computer.

Install the software:

/usr/sbin/pkgadd -d /tmp/xcontrolx.pkg all
